Precast/Prestressed Girder Help

Midspan Shielding

In certain areas, the shielding of top strands at midspan is permitted. This helps to reduce release stresses while maintaining strength-reducing or adverse stress effects in the midspan area. Precast/Prestressed Girder can simulate the midspan shielding effect at all strand levels, even though only top strands are usually shielded in this manner.

To define the midspan shielding, click the Debond button on the Strand Pattern and input the desired value for the desired group under the Midspan Shielding column. If midspan shielding is 5 ft for a group, Precast/Prestressed Girder assumes the following:

  • The strands at that level will be shielded for 2.5 ft on either side of midspan.
  • Since these strands will be cut at the midspan, the effective ends will be at the terminal points of the shielding.
